Asset identification

Confirm the magnetic separators included in the visit and the equipment context available at the time of inspection.

Document accessible condition and observed exceptions before any measurement is taken.

Record magnetic flux-density readings at defined, repeatable test locations using a calibrated gauss meter.

Use the right measurement

Gauss and pull force answer different questions.

Gauss testing

Measures magnetic flux density at a point. The result depends on probe orientation, test location, surface condition, geometry, and temperature.

Pull-force testing

Measures the force required to separate a defined test piece from the magnet under a defined setup. It is not interchangeable with a gauss reading.

Important: Neither method should be converted into the other without a validated basis. A single peak reading also does not prove capture of every hazardous fragment under every process condition.

  • Meter model, serial number, and calibration evidence
  • Probe, fixture, orientation, and identified test points
  • Raw readings and units—not only pass/fail
  • Facility-owned acceptance criteria or baseline
  • Exceptions, corrective actions, and retest triggers
Regulatory context: 21 CFR Part 117 is risk-based. It does not prescribe a universal annual mag-trap test, a universal gauss threshold, or a universal third-party provider requirement. The facility remains responsible for its hazard analysis, control design, procedures, acceptance criteria, frequency, corrective actions, and records.
